How Much Watching Time Do You Have This Weekend?
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/23/arts/television/Wynonna-Earp-hannibal-meerkat-manor.html Version 0 of 1. ‘Wynonna Earp’When to watch: Sunday at 10 p.m., on Syfy. A day I worried would never arrive is almost here: This quirky horror-adventure demon-hunter series returns for Season 4 this weekend, almost two years after the Season 3 finale. I would start at the beginning, not only because there’s a lot of mythology and serial storytelling but also because this show is a ton of fun and makes for perfect summer fare thanks to punchy dialogue, zippy plots and imaginative universe building. Seasons 1 to 3 are streaming on Netflix. ‘Hannibal’When to watch: Now, on Netflix. If you can handle the extremes of hallucinatory gore, try this gone-too-soon drama, which aired on NBC from 2013-15. Mads Mikkelsen stars as Hannibal Lecter, the seductive, glamorous and sociopathic cannibal. The show is extremely aware that disgust and arousal go hand in hand — well, hand in something — and its lush perversions seem to know no bounds. Even though this is a show about consuming, it’s too morbid to binge; limit yourself to two episodes a night, and make a little pact that you will say, “Can you believe this aired on network TV?” only once per episode. ‘Meerkat Manor’When to watch: Now, on Amazon. Even if you’re not usually big on nature shows, try “Meerkat Manor,” less a strict documentary than a juicy tale of power, primacy, territorialism, brutality, exile and family drama. When the show premiered in 2005, it was the “Game of Thrones” of its time, and I’ll warn you that it has just as much danger and death as any high-end drama. Only the first three of four seasons are currently streaming, and it’s the British version, narrated by Bill Nighy. (The American version was narrated by Sean Astin.) But if you miss having a big, sprawling show to obsess over, watch this. |
