Arrests over 'unprovoked' assault

Three men have been arrested after a man was the victim of an "unprovoked attack" in Cardiff city centre.

The man suffered serious head injuries following the incident in St Mary Street just before 1900 GMT on Friday.

A South Wales Police spokesman said the man was taken to hospital and his condition was being assessed.

Police are appealing for anyone who was near the Wharton Street junction of St Mary Street and who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

Insp Bishop of Cardiff Central Police Station said: "Shortly before 7pm a man was assaulted in St Mary Street in what appeared to be an unprovoked attack."

He said the men under arrest were being held at Cardiff Central Police Station.

Insp Bishop added: "I would ask anyone who was in the area of St Mary Street near to its junction with Wharton Street at around 6.30pm who may have witnessed the incident can they please contact Cardiff Central CID on 02920 527310 or Crime Stoppers on 0800 555111"
