Wonder to get White House award Stevie Wonder honoured by Obama
(about 17 hours later)
Motown legend Stevie Wonder is to be honoured with a special prize during a ceremony at the White House later. President Obama has honoured Stevie Wonder, his musical hero, with America's highest award for pop music at a ceremony at the White House.
US President Barack Obama will present the multi-Grammy winning soul star with the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library of Congress. The president said the Motown legend had been the soundtrack to his youth and he doubted that his wife would have married him if he hadn't been a fan.
The award commemorates a composer or performer for their lifetime contributions to popular music. Presenting him with the Library of Congress' Gershwin prize, Obama said Wonder's style was uniquely American.
Wonder is only the second person to have received the accolade. The first was Paul Simon in 2007. His song Signed, Sealed, Delivered was a theme song during Obama's campaign.
On Monday Wonder played at the Library of Congress. A full orchestra accompanied the performer, who played the piano, keyboard and harmonica. Here I am baby
His 1970 track Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours was a theme song during the presidential campaign, while he also performed at the Democratic National Convention in Denver on the night Mr Obama accepted his party's nomination. The First Couple also used You and I, a Wonder song, as their wedding song.
Michelle Obama - no date unless Barack was a Stevie fan"I think it's fair to say that had I not been a Stevie Wonder fan, Michelle might not have dated me, we might not have married," President Obama said.
"The fact that we agreed on Stevie was part of the essence of our courtship."
In an interview with Rolling Stone last year, the then senator said: "If I had one musical hero, it would have to be Stevie Wonder."
Michelle Obama called Wonder "one of the world's greatest artists" and said that Wonder's Talking Book was the first album she bought.
