Several injured in coach accident Several injured in coach accident
(40 minutes later)
Several people are thought to be seriously injured after a crash involving a coach and three cars on the border of North and East Yorkshire. Three men and a woman have been seriously injured in a crash involving a coach and three cars on the border of North and East Yorkshire.
Air ambulance, police, fire and RAF crews were at the scene of the accident on the B1248 at North Grimston, between Malton and Driffield. Firefighters had to free five people from their vehicles after the accident on the B1248 at North Grimston, between Malton and Driffield at 1300 GMT.
Fire and ambulance crews freed five people who were trapped in vehicles. The coach, carrying five men, was in collision with a Subaru Impreza, a Citroen Xantia and a Skoda Fabia.
Four people have been airlifted to hospital and others have been transported in road ambulances. Two men in the Subaru and a couple in the Citroen were airlifted to hospital.
The exact number of injured people is unclear. All four suffered serious injuries, North Yorkshire Police said.
The 50 coach passengers are not believed to be among those seriously hurt. Some of them are believed to be migrant workers. A force spokesman said the three other passengers in the Subaru were "walking wounded" and were taken to hospital in York by road ambulance.
A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Fire Service said she was not aware of any fatalities at this stage. The five coach passengers, who are believed to be migrant workers, and a woman in the Skoda suffered minor injuries.
She said: "We have released all the casualties and transported them in various helicopters to hospital. The road is expected to remain closed until 1900 GMT and diversions are in place.
"There are some serious injuries and at this stage I am aware that five people have been released from the vehicles." Police have urged witnesses to the crash to come forward.
North Yorkshire Police could not confirm if those on the coach were migrant workers, but said they were believed to be foreign. They particularly want to speak to the driver of a white lorry carrying a green trailer, whom officers said could be a "key witness".
