A teacher at a Guatemala juvenile prison has been killed and mutilated by rioting inmates, say police.

Police spokesman Donald Gonzalez said the prisoners took three teachers hostage in protest at the transfer of fellow inmates to another reformatory.

One of the teachers, named as Winter Vidaurre, was killed before police regained control of the prison using tear gas.

Mr Gonzalez said the inmates had cut the teacher's heart out.

The violence broke out on Tuesday at the Etapa II Reformatory in San Jose Pinula, Guatemala, about 25km (15 miles) east of Guatemala City.

Media reports said Mr Vidaurre was aged 28 and a handicraft instructor.
