The family of a Liverpool man murdered in Spain three years ago hope to finally bring his body home after it was released by the authorities.

Gary Dunne, 22, from West Derby, was stabbed at Benalmadena on the Costa del Sol in March 2006.

Spanish regulations had prevented his parents bringing his body home for burial, but after intervention by politicians, his remains were released.

It is believed the body could be flown back to the UK later.

Victor Posse Navas was jailed for nine years by a judge in Malaga last year after admitting the attack.

His parents, Steven and Lee Dunne, campaigned to get their son's body repatriated in order to hold a family funeral.

The move had been blocked by authorities because Spanish laws on hygiene and human remains meant the body could only be moved if cremated.

But the decision was reversed after Gordon Brown raised the issue with his Spanish counterpart, Jose Zapatero.

Papers were formally signed at a court hearing on Monday allowing the remains to be released.
