The body of a Liverpool man murdered in Spain three years ago has arrived back in the UK.

Gary Dunne, 22, from West Derby, was stabbed at Benalmadena on the Costa del Sol in March 2006.

Spanish authorities had been blocking his body being brought home for burial because of local hygiene regulations.

Following intervention by Prime Minster Gordon Brown his parents collected a coffin containing Mr Dunne's body from Manchester Airport on Thursday.

Victor Posse Navas, 23, was jailed for nine years by a judge in Malaga last year after admitting the attack.

Long delay

Mr Dunne's parents, Steven and Lee, campaigned to get their son's body repatriated in order to hold a family funeral.

But the move had been blocked by Spanish authorities because the country's policy on human remains meant the body could only be moved if cremated.

The Dunne family and supporters had also compiled a 40,000-strong petition of people across Merseyside lobbying for the builder's body to be released.

The decision was reversed after Gordon Brown raised the issue with his Spanish counterpart, Jose Zapatero.

Merseyside MEP Arlene McCarthy said nobody should have to face such a long delay.

Mr Dunne's funeral is expected to be held shortly.
