Brick plant workers to lose jobs
http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/1/hi/northern_ireland/7933617.stm Version 0 of 1. Workers at a brick-making plant in Tyrone have been told they are to lose their jobs, the trade union Unite has said. The union Unite said 62 workers at Tyrone Brick were to be made redundant. The company confirmed that redundancies were planned and said discussions with staff were at an advanced stage. Unite's Philip Oakes said the company told him production would cease as they had a stockpile of bricks equivalent to 16 months production. He said the 62 production workers had been given 30 days notice that they were to lose their jobs. Mr Oakes said he was pessimistic about their future and feared there would be no reprieve for the workers unless there was a dramatic upturn in the construction industry. "They have indicated to us that the company needed to cease production for 16 months on the basis that they have over-produced and under-sold in recent months," he said. |
