Police have been investigating the disappearance of islander Simon MacMillan, 21, who went missing after a dance on Boxing Day. An official identification and an explanation of how he died are expected to be confirmed later by Northern Constabulary.
A spokeswoman said the body had not yet been identified. The search was officially abandoned in February. However, relatives and members of the community refused to give up hope of finding Mr MacMillan and had continued to look for him themselves.
She added that the force was not aware of any missing persons in the area other than Mr MacMillan. Simon Macmillan, a Merchant Navy cadet, was last seen getting out of a mini-bus just two miles from his home at Ardmore, after a Christmas dance.
