A 13-year-old girl is being treated in hospital after she was shot in the leg and face at a school in Leicestershire.

Officers were called to Beaumont Leys School on Anstey Lane on Monday after Bonnee O'Connor was shot while chatting to friends on a playing field.

She was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary where a ball bearing was removed from her cheek on Tuesday.

It is believed she was shot with an air weapon. A 15-year-old boy was arrested after the incident.

A spokeswoman from the school said: "We can confirm that a student was shot with what appears to be an air gun in the school grounds.

"Staff were on the scene immediately and dealt with the situation extremely well. Because of the police investigation it's difficult for us to give any more details at this time.

"We are satisfied that our security procedures are as robust as they can be, but we will of course be looking at whether there is anything more we can do."

Leicestershire Police confirmed a full investigation was under way.
