Police confirmed the circumstances behind the death of the man, thought to be in his 50s, have been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
Scotland Yard said he had collapsed and was found unconscious near the Bank of England.
The London Ambulance Service took him to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.
IPCC investigators will examine CCTV footage and have attended the post-mortem examination.
