Murray seeded 15 for Aussie Open Murray gets good Aussie Open draw
(about 19 hours later)
British number one Andy Murray has been made the number 15 seed for next week's Australian Open in Melbourne. British number one Andy Murray will play Spaniard Alberto Martin in the first round of the Australian Open, which starts on Monday.
It is the 19-year-old's highest seeding for a Grand Slam event and the first time he has been seeded in Australia. Murray, seeded 15th, has been placed in the same half of the draw as second seed Rafael Nadal but away from Roger Federer and Andy Roddick.
Defending champion and world number one Roger Federer is top men's seed with Spaniard Rafael Nadal second. Murray lost 6-4 6-4 to Roddick at the Kooyong Classic on Friday.
With women's world number one Justine Henin-Hardenne missing the event, Maria Sharapova is the top women's seed ahead of defending champion Amelie Mauresmo. More soon.
The draw for the Australian Open takes place on Friday.
606 DEBATE: Discuss Murray's chances in Melbourne
There are few surprises in the seedings, which was based on the world rankings.
Murray has risen to 15 in the world list, his best-ever ranking, following his run to the final of the Qatar Open last week.
Nadal, who missed last year's Australian Open through injury, is a doubt again after suffering a groin injury in a warm-up event.
Australian Lleyton Hewitt, beaten by Marat Safin in the 2005 final, has been seeded 19th but faces a race to get fit after picking up a calf strain.
Russian Nikolay Davydenko and Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic are seeded third and fourth respectively.
Elsewhere in the women's section, Serena Williams, the 2005 champion and world number 94, is unseeded and could effectively face one of the top four seeds in the opening round.
Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova is seeded third and Belgian Kim Clijsters is next in her final Open appearance before retiring.
