Boy falls into caustic soda tank

A nine-year-old boy has suffered serious burns after plunging through a roof and into a vat of caustic soda.

Brooklyn Briggs, from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was trying to get his football off the top of a derelict workshop when the roof gave way.

He fell into a tank of liquid chemicals in the building in Bear Tree Street.

His mother, Tracey Briggs, said a friend had helped her son out of the tank and he had been taken to Sheffield Children's Hospital.

His condition was described as stable.

'Help me'

Mrs Briggs told BBC Radio Sheffield: "One of his friends actually came up to our house and knocked on the door, screaming that Brooklyn had dropped into some acid.

"My husband Gary ran down the street [and] I got in the car and drove down.

"As I got there he was in Gary's arms just screaming 'help me daddy, help me daddy, please help me'."

South Yorkshire Police said there was no criminal investigation but the force was working with the Health and Safety Executive and Rotherham Council's Environmental Health department to investigate the cause of the accident, which happened on Tuesday.
