Version 0 of 1.

A teacher was sacked for taking a gun into a Derbyshire school, the BBC has learned.

Nobody was hurt in the incident which has came to light after a request by BBC Radio Derby under the Freedom of Information Act.

A county council spokesman said the school and the teacher would not be named until an inquiry by the General Teaching Council had been carried out.

Nine teachers were dismissed or suspended between 2004 and 2006.

'Public concern'

Speaking on BBC Radio Derby, Derbyshire County Council's education spokesman, Councillor Alan Charles, said: "Although he (the teacher) has been dismissed from his job in Derbyshire, it is still subject to a General Teaching Council hearing."

Mr Charles added: "I can understand the public concern here ... there was no danger to anybody, either children or staff in the school involved and in fact, the alleged gun wasn't brought into the building."

Mr Charles did not outline how the weapon was discovered when the incident took place in 2005.

"I suspect that when the General Teaching Council has completed its inquiries, and if it does go to a full case then the details will be made public," he said.
