Church is robbed during wedding Church theft 'new low'- inspector
(1 day later)
A church in Londonderry has been robbed during a wedding ceremony. Police are investigating the theft of £400 from a chapel in Londonderry at the weekend.
Three men and two women stole a substantial sum of money from the office of St Brigid's church while the ceremony took place on Saturday. Three men and two women were caught on CCTV taking money from St Brigid's Church in Carnhill as a wedding was starting on Saturday afternoon.
The thieves were disturbed as they ransacked the office and ran away in the direction of the Northside Shopping Centre. PSNI Inspector Jon Burrows said the thieves had reached a new low stealing from the church safe.
Parish priest Joe Gormley said: "I am very sad and disappointed that people would use a church to commit a crime." "Criminals can't stoop any lower than going into a place of worship and stealing money," he said.
"This is money that comes from the pockets of the community so I'd appeal to them not to have any misplaced loyalty.
"If you know who these people are, please give us a name, you can do it in confidence through Crimestoppers or contact us at Strand Road."
