Footballer in court over assault

The West Ham defender Anton Ferdinand has appeared in court charged with assault and violent disorder.

Mr Ferdinand, 21, of Mottingham, south-east London, was arrested following an incident outside the Faces nightclub in Ilford, east London.

Redbridge magistrates transferred his case to the Snaresbrook Crown Court where he will appear on 1 March with Edward Dawkins, 26, of Beckton, London.

He has been accused of violent disorder and assault occasioning actual bodily.

Mr Ferdinand has made 93 league appearances for West Ham since joining them in December 2002.
