Ten inmates have died at a prison in Chile after a fire broke out during a fight between rival gangs of prisoners, officials have said. A cooking stove was overturned during the fight and set off the fire, said Alejandro Jimenez, head of Chile's prison service. Three people were also injured in Sunday's fire at Colina prison, outside the capital, Santiago. Firefighters later managed to get the blaze under control. "This situation started with a fight and ended with the fire," Mr Jimenez said. "There has been no riot or jailbreak attempt." Local media reported that all the dead and injured were inmates. Authorities are investigating possible charges against the prisoners involved in the brawl. |
