Anti-terror police finish search

Counter-terrorism officers have finished their search of Heaton Park in Manchester, following anti-terror raids in which 12 men were arrested. Police did not say what they are looking for but have said the three-day search was part of an "ongoing counter-terrorism operation". They used metal detectors and dogs to scour an area near a boating lake. All the men arrested last month in Liverpool, Manchester, Liverpool and Clitheroe were freed without charge. With the exception of one man, they have now been told they face deportation on grounds of national security. Police faced criticism after prosecutors said there was insufficient evidence to justify bringing any charges against the 12 arrested men. The searches began at 0830 BST on Thursday at the park, which is about two miles from Cheetham Hill where several addresses were raided in the 8 April operation. |
