The prime minister has unveiled a memorial to a murdered policewoman at the place where she was shot during an armed robbery. | |
Gordon Brown said people would never "forget the life and the sacrifice" of Pc Sharon Beshenivsky. | |
The 38-year-old was killed during an armed raid on a travel agency in Bradford, in November 2005. | |
Family, friends and former colleagues gathered for the ceremony at the site of the shooting in Morley Street. | |
Mr Brown was joined on stage by Pc Beshenivsky's widower Paul, their children and the chairman of the Police Memorial Trust Michael Winner. | |

Mr Brown was speaking in front of a crowd of dignitaries, including Home Secretary Jacqui Smith and family, friends and former colleagues of the officer. | |
He said: "We are all gathered here together because of the importance of today, to celebrate the dedication, the service, the professionalism and, most of all, the courage of a young police officer who gave her life serving the community, gave her life doing what she loved doing, gave her life doing what police officers have to do every day." | |
He added: "I believe the whole nation owes her a debt of gratitude." | |

Mr Brown described Pc Beshenivsky as "a wonderful wife, a wonderful mother, a wonderful servant of the community" and added: "Sharon, we will never ever forget." | |
The Prime Minister also praised the officer's "magnificent family" and the courage of her children - Lydia, aged seven, Paul, 10, Sam 14 and stepchildren Josh, 14, and Emma, 17. | |
Addressing them, Mr Brown said: "We wish you every success in everything you do in the future. We are very, very proud of all of you." | |
Pc Beshenivsky's husband Paul described how his wife's death had affected the family. | |
"After she died we were lost for a long time," he said. | |
"But slowly we have learned to overcome the grief, we have rebuilt our lives, we have learned to laugh again, to love and trust again and for those who have made this possible, we thank you." | |
After giving his speech, the couple's son Paul publicly thanked the Police Memorial Trust, which provided the memorial stone. | |
