The spokeswoman said she could not confirm exactly when Ms Griffiths contacted police. The IPCC said Ms Griffiths telephoned police at about 1800 BST on the evening before her death to inform them she was being harassed.
The arrested man has non-life-threatening injuries, police said earlier. She was found at her home in Bull Rush Crescent early on Wednesday morning and taken to West Suffolk Hospital, where she died a short time later.
The child suffered a minor injury and was treated at hospital and released. IPCC Commissioner Len Jackson said: "It is important that we look carefully at how the police chose to respond to contact from Mary Griffiths prior to her death.
"We will therefore carry out a full and independent investigation into the police response, and we will make our findings public as soon as possible."
In a statement, the family of Ms Griffiths said: "Mary Frances was the very best mother, sister, daughter and friend.
"We are blessed to have her in our lives. Sadly this has been taken away from us, and we will never get over her sad tragic loss."
