Spurs' King bailed over 'assault' King 'regrets' nightclub incident
(about 6 hours later)
Footballer Ledley King, who was arrested outside a London nightclub on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm, has been bailed by police. Footballer Ledley King said a "night out with friends went too far" after he was bailed following an alleged assault outside a London nightclub.
The Tottenham Hotspur captain had played in the club's Premier League game against Everton on Saturday. The Spurs captain was questioned on suspicion of an assault on another man in Soho in the early hours of Sunday.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault following an allegation of assault by a man in his 20s." In a statement on Spurs' website, Mr King, 28, said he had apologised to club manager Harry Redknapp.
He said the man was arrested in Soho Street at about 0230 BST. The player has been bailed by police until mid-July while inquiries continue into the incident.
The spokesman said: "The man was arrested after a routine patrol was flagged down. Charing Cross CID are investigating." Mr King's statement reads: "I sincerely regret that a night out with friends went too far. I have apologised to Harry and I fully appreciate that, as a professional footballer, I have a duty to behave in a responsible manner.
He added the player had been bailed until mid-July while police inquiries continued. 'Out of character'
In a statement, Tottenham Hotspur FC said: "The club is aware of an incident involving Ledley King in the early hours of Sunday morning. "I am assisting the police with their inquiries.
"We await details and information and it would be inappropriate to make any further comment at this time." "Anyone who knows me, knows that much of what has been suggested is totally out of character.
The player has 19 international caps and was in the England squad for the 2004 European Championship. "I am keen to resolve this as soon as possible and concentrate on my football. I shall be putting my all into ensuring I give of my best for the remaining fixtures."
Earlier, speaking outside London's Charing Cross Police Station, Inspector Phil Clare said: "I can confirm, in the early hours of this morning, a man was arrested on suspicion of assault.
"He has been interviewed at this police station and as a result of what he's told us we've bailed him to come back at a later date."
Celebrity crowd
The incident is alleged to have taken place outside Punk nightclub in Soho Street.
The venue, formerly known as Nightclub Pop, attracts a celebrity crowd with guests including Kate Moss and Lily Allen and offers table bookings with a minimum spend of £500, according to its website.
