A spokeswoman said it is believed to be an ammonia leak and a number of casualties have been taken to hospital. All 90 people who were on the Scottish and Newcastle site at the time have been accounted for.
The site has been cordoned off and evacuated and Thames Valley police are describing it as "a major incident". A spokesman for the company said the leak had been contained and there was no danger to the public.
Six fire engines are at the scene, near junction 11 of the M4, along with a specialist chemical unit. The five people are being treated at the Royal Berkshire Hospital after inhaling ammonia. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
An investigation into the cause of the leak is under way.
