Version 0 of 1.

A new jail being built in Bishopbriggs near Glasgow is to keep the name Low Moss, it has been confirmed.

The original Low Moss, which had been on the site in East Dunbartonshire for 40 years, has been demolished to make way for the the new 700-cell prison.

The Scottish Prison Service said it had always been using HMP Bishopbriggs as just a working title.

Locals have objected to the "negative connotations" and campaigners welcomed the confirmation as "common sense".

The new jail is scheduled to be completed in 2011.

Hundreds of people and a number of politicians and councillors signed an online petition objecting to the prison being identified with Bishopbriggs.

Liberal Democrat MP Jo Swinson said: "It is thanks to the activism of many in the local community who have supported the campaign against the name change that the SPS has reversed its plans to rename Low Moss Bishopbriggs Prison."

A spokesman said that the SPS had always made it clear Bishopbriggs had been a working title for the new prison-building project to differentiate it from the old Low Moss.

He said that now that the site has been cleared and after looking at suggestions for the new institution, Low Moss has been confirmed as the name.
