Nine held after trouble at march Two charged over trouble at march
(1 day later)
Nine men were arrested after trouble broke out at a march through Luton. Two of nine people arrested over alleged disorder at a protest march in Bedfordshire have been charged and one has been given a fixed penalty fine.
Police said up to 400 people set off on a planned peaceful protest held against demonstrations at an Armed Forces homecoming parade earlier this year. The march in support of the armed forces took place in Luton on Sunday.
Officers said an Asian man was assaulted, a shop window was smashed and several cars were damaged in the town centre on Sunday evening. Police said a man was charged with possessing an offensive weapon after stones were found in his pockets.
In March, a group of anti-war protesters demonstrated at a parade for the Royal Anglian Regiment. A woman was charged with breaching an anti-social behaviour order and another man was given an £80 fixed penalty notice for a public order offence.
Bedfordshire Police said officers were studying CCTV footage and said further arrests could be made in the coming days. The man charged over the stones will appear at Luton Magistrates' Court in due course, Bedfordshire Police said.
A spokeswoman said Sunday's march started in Manor Park at 1700 BST The other six people arrested, all men, have been bailed without charge pending further inquiries.
They added that by 1730 BST several groups had peeled off from the main protest and had started causing problems in the town centre. Studying CCTV footage
The situation was under control by 1830 BST. Earlier this year Muslim demonstrators protested during the Royal Anglian Regiment's homecoming parade in Luton.
The nine men were in custody after being arrested on suspicion of a variety of public order offences, criminal damage and assault, officers said. Police said up to 400 people set off on a planned peaceful protest on Sunday in response to the earlier demonstration.
The spokeswoman said: "The peaceful marchers formed up in Manor Park - however, other large groups who had been in the town centre pubs all afternoon did not join the march. Officers said an Asian man was assaulted, a shop window was smashed and several cars were damaged in the town centre after a group broke away.
"It was clear that some were determined to cause trouble and broke away from the main march in several groups and up some of the side streets running off George Street." Bedfordshire Police said officers were studying CCTV footage and that further arrests could be made in the coming days.
About 10,000 people were expected to take part in the Luton Carnival on Monday. Police said about 250 officers would be there.
