An army helicopter carrying India's top military commander and his family has crashed in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. India's top military commander has died in a helicopter crash in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the air force says.

It was not immediately known if Gen Rawat and his family were safe. Reports said there were 14 people on board. One survivor is being treated for his injuries in hospital.
A minister in the state government said five people had died and two others were critical. Gen Rawat, 63, was appointed India's first-ever Chief of Defence Staff in January 2019.
Tamil Nadu Forest Minister K Ramachandran said the rescue operation was underway and the injured, some with severe burns, had been taken to hospital. The Indian Air Force said it had ordered an investigation into the accident. A cabinet security committee is to hold an emergency session, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On Twitter, Mr Modi said: "[Gen Rawat] brought with him a rich experience of serving in the Army. India will never forget his exceptional service."
