Stolen car hits police officers

Two police officers have been knocked down by a stolen car while they were investigating a burglary in Lancashire.

Sgt Shaun Pearson, who suffered back injuries and Pc Barry James, who had his wrist broken, are both recovering at home.

They were hit by the white Ford Focus in the early hours of Friday morning on Long Causeway in Burnley.

Two men from West Yorkshire, aged 24 and 22, have been arrested and police have appealed for information.

Officers were called to a break-in at a house on Aspen Drive at about 0130 BST.

A red Audi A3, the Ford Focus ST and a Seat Leon were seen by officers in Cliviger.

The Ford Focus struck the officers before all three cars were driven off. They have been recovered.

The two arrested men, from Bradford, have been held on suspicion of burglary, aggravated vehicle taking and dangerous driving.

Det Supt Kevin Toole, of Lancashire Police, said: "We are treating this as a potential attempted murder.

"I would appeal for anyone who has seen these three vehicles, or a combination of them, in the Burnley or Cliviger areas to come forward and speak to us."
