Iraq war inquiry to be outlined Brown to outline Iraq War inquiry
(10 minutes later)
The government is set to announce the details of its planned inquiry into the Iraq war, the BBC has learned. Prime Minister Gordon Brown is set to announce details of an inquiry into the Iraq war in the Commons at 1530 BST.
It is understood that a statement will be made to the House of Commons at 1530 BST outlining the plan. Opposition parties - and many Labour MPs - have been calling for an inquiry since shortly after the 2003 invasion.
The government had previously said an inquiry should not take place until UK combat operations in Iraq had finished. They will now be watching closely to see whether the long-awaited inquiry is to be held in public or private.
BBC political correspondent James Landale said ministers could face political pressure if they decide that the inquiry should be held in private. In March, ministers said they would hold an inquiry into the war "as soon as practically possible" after the bulk of UK service personnel left Iraq.
