The Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh is to close for two years for major refurbishment after the weekend.

The pool, which was opened in January 1970 by Princess Anne and hosted two Commonwealth Games, will close its doors on Sunday at 1900 BST.

The work will include a new 25m diving pool with moveable floor, 25m teaching pool and large gym.

There will also be new changing rooms, reception, cafe and the 50m pool will be refurbished.

Of 101 staff working at the pool before the closure, Edinburgh Leisure has found alternative jobs for the vast majority, although two have taken redundancy and Edinburgh Leisure said it is still looking for new roles for another three.

Keith Jackson, Edinburgh Leisure chief executive, said: "The Royal Commonwealth Pool has been an exceptionally popular venue for the citizens of Edinburgh and beyond for almost 40 years.

"Edinburgh Leisure has worked hard to ensure that all possible arrangements have been put in place to reduce the impact that the closure will have on all of our valued customers.

"We very much look forward to an exciting new future for the Royal Commonwealth Pool and to welcoming everyone back to a fantastic new venue in two years."
