Tyre manufacturer Pirelli has begun a five-day shutdown at its two factories in the UK.

Production ceased at its plants in Carlisle and Burton-upon-Trent on Saturday, and will restart on 2 July.

Bosses said the move was in response to a lower than expected demand for tyres across Europe.

In March the firm cut 20 jobs at the Carlisle factory in Dalston Road. Previous shutdowns took place at both plants earlier this year.

A Pirelli spokesman said: "The company appreciates this is a worrying and financially challenging period for our employees however this action is necessary for securing the future of Pirelli in the UK."
