Nine dead in shooting at Buffalo supermarket - reports Buffalo shooting: Ten dead in attack at New York state supermarket
(about 1 hour later)
At least nine people have been killed in a shooting at a supermarket in New York state, US media report. The suspect - who has been detained - is believed to have driven for hours to reach the predominantly black area of Buffalo
Police are at the scene in the city of Buffalo and say a suspect has been taken into custody. Ten people have been killed in a shooting at a supermarket in New York state, police say.
Officers believe the gunman entered the supermarket on Saturday afternoon before opening fire with a high-powered rifle, the Associated Press reports. An 18-year-old man has been arrested at the scene in the city of Buffalo. He has not been named by police.
Multiple people were shot in the incident, police said, without giving further details. The suspect entered the busy supermarket on Saturday before opening fire while using a camera to live-stream the attack online, police said.
But unnamed law enforcement officials told several media outlets, including the BBC's US partner CBS News, that at least nine people had been killed. The FBI is investigating the shooting - which left three other people injured - as a racially-motivated hate crime.
Police are expected to give an update in a news conference later on Saturday. At a news conference, police said the suspect was carrying heavy weaponry while wearing body armour and a tactical helmet.
Speaking to CBS, a police source said the detained suspect was a white male who allegedly shouted racial slurs during the attack. "This is the worst nightmare that any community can face and we are hurting, we are seething right now," Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said.
The Buffalo News, meanwhile, reported that the suspect wore a camera and body armour as well as a "military grade helmet". He added that the suspect was not from the city and is believed to have driven for several hours to reach the predominantly black area of Buffalo.
It said police were investigating whether the suspect livestreamed the attack. "We are investigating this incident as both a hate crime and a case of racially motivated violent extremism," Stephen Belongia, the special agent in charge of the FBI's Buffalo office, told the news conference,
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she was monitoring the situation and urged residents to avoid the area. Speaking to CBS earlier on Saturday, a police source said the detained suspect allegedly shouted racial slurs during the attack.
US President Joe Biden has been briefed on the shooting. "The president and the first lady are praying for those who have been lost and for their loved ones," a White House statement said.
