The weekly newspaper, based in Downpatrick, is to merge with its sister paper the Newry Democrat. It is understood that only one reporter will be absorbed into the new newspaper, with the remaining employees, about 12, losing their jobs. Thomas Crosbie Holdings own the papers and its managing director said it would be called The Newry Democrat incorporating the Down Democrat. "There will be a number of job losses. Staff are being informed at the moment," said Anthony Dinan. |
