The blaze, which broke out at about 0200 BST on Friday, caused substantial damage to the bungalow in Artigarvan. Hall Key, 38, was rescued from the blaze at a bungalow on the Windyhill Road in Artigarvan at about 0200 BST on Friday.
Two women who had been asleep in the property were woken by a fire alarm, and managed to escape. His wife and an 18-year-old friend who were asleep at the time were woken by a fire alarm and managed to escape.
Fire commander Jonathan Tate said the man was rescued from the living room of the property. Mr Key's brother Hamilton said Hall was "in a lot of pain".
"On arrival we were told that a male occupant of the house was unaccounted for. "The first words we heard were that he had 28% burns, and before we left the hospital it had gone up to 40%, and who knows, when he goes to the Royal it could go up higher," he said.
"Four or five firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were tasked to search the dwelling for the unaccounted and to fight the fire. "The burns are on his legs and his back. My father doesn't keep too well and he's just worried, we're all worried."
"Two officers quickly located and removed the male from the living room," he said. Fire commander Jonathan Tate said Mr Key was rescued from the living room of the house."
The man was brought outside where paramedics treated him before he was taken to hospital. "On arrival we were told that a male occupant of the house was unaccounted for," said the fire officer.
"Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were tasked to search the dwelling for the unaccounted man and to fight the fire.
"Two officers quickly located and removed the male from the living room."
He was taken outside and treated by paramedics before being taken to Altnagelvin Hospital.
