A woman is in a critical condition in hospital after suffering head injuries in what police believe was an assault. A woman has died after suffering severe head injuries in what police described as a "horrific assault" in Ilford, east London.
Police were called by paramedics at about 02:45 BST on Sunday to Cranbrook Road in Ilford, east London. Metropolitan Police said it happened in the early hours of Sunday as the 36-year-old was walking along Cranbrook Road, towards Gants Hill station.
Officers say the identity of the woman remains unknown, but they are urgently trying to make contact with her family. Officers were called to the scene by paramedics at 02:44 BST and the woman, who has not been formally identified, later died in hospital.
Ch Supt Stuart Bell said teams were "working at pace to establish what happened and identify whoever was responsible". The area remains cordoned off.
