Paper and comb title up for grabs

The World Paper and Comb Championship is set to take place at the Stonehaven Folk Festival.

The festival, which is in its 21st year, is expected to attract about 2,000 people over the next four days.

The attractions include the annual paper and comb contest, which will take place on Saturday.

Former champions include Bob Kibble, a science education lecturer at Moray House School of Education at Edinburgh University, who won the title in 2002.

In the run-up to the event, which takes place on Saturday, Mr Kibble told the BBC how he became involved in the event and gave a demonstration of his skills.

He said: "I was on holiday taking in the Stonehaven Folk Festival and I read there was the world championships.

"It was something I did once or twice as a child. They gave out combs and everyone was making a noise, then they handed out entry forms.

"I was just having fun as you do on holiday, but the competition was fierce. I did 'My Way'."

Explaining the technique, he said: "You need loo paper of the medicated variety you had a school, and a standard comb.

"You fold the paper over the bridge if the comb. You kiss the paper and hum at the same time."

Meanwhile, UnstFest - which is billed as the UK's most northerly festival thanks to its venue at the top of the Shetland Islands - is also under way. It runs from Thursday until 19 July.
