Bateman told the BBC he pulled out as he did not want to participate in a planned assault course challenge.
"I pulled out because they did not tell me what the task entailed until I found out in the papers on Sunday," he said.
The challenge was to be recreated from Bateman's first spell in the Big Brother compound, pitting him against a current housemate.
'Miscommunication' | |
"As I didn't perform well in the task back then, it's highly unlikely I'd perform it well again and they obviously knew that and chose to withhold it from me," he said.
"The executive producer has sent me an email apologising for the miscommunication, as they called it."
Bateman denied newspaper reports that he pulled out of the show over payment.
Big Brother series one winner Craig Phillips will now replace Bateman
He said: "It wasn't a factor - I would have appeared it that was not the task. Why would I go and do something I couldn't do?
"I had suggested I'd be happy to do something else, like going in to the house for a period of time or being the voice of Big Brother," he added.
Bateman's appearance was due to take place nine years after he was thrown off the first series of Big Brother. | Bateman's appearance was due to take place nine years after he was thrown off the first series of Big Brother. |

A Channel 4 spokeswoman said: "Unfortunately Nick Bateman was unable to take part in the Big Brother 10 birthday celebration tasks today," she said.
Series eight winner Brian Belo will also return to the house
"Happily Big Brother One winner Craig Phillips will be head-to-head with housemates in the assault course task.
"None of the former housemates are being paid a fee for taking part in the tasks taking place this week. A donation will go to the Jade Goody foundation instead."
