"According to reports received here, a lashkar (traditional tribal militia) killed 23 militants and several others were wounded," local administration official Asad Ali Khan was quoted by news agency AFP as saying. The tribesmen belong to a pro-government tribal lashkar (militia) which has been engaged in clashes with the militants in recent weeks.
Another official Mohammad Rasul Khan said three villagers were missing after the clashes between a 150-strong village force and militants, the agency reported. "The clash took place in the Kohmor Gar area of Mohmand's Anbar sub-division late on Monday evening," Major Fazl, a spokesman for Pakistan's paramilitary Frontier Corps told the BBC Urdu service.
"The lashkar has fought very well and militants are now on the run," he said, adding that villagers had gone into the mountains to take on the rebels. "The Taliban lost 15 men, while three of the tribesmen were injured."
