Search for woman missing on moors Woman spotted on moors found safe
(about 3 hours later)
A major search operation is under way after a young woman went missing overnight in atrocious weather on the Pennines in West Yorkshire. A young woman who sparked a search operation after being spotted on moors in West Yorkshire overnight has been found safe and well, police have said.
The woman, who is about 19 years old, was seen on moors between Withinsclough reservoir and Stoodley Pike monument near Todmorden, police said. The woman, thought to be about 19 years old, was seen walking near Todmorden in driving rain and winds wearing just a mini skirt, hoodie and fishnet tights.
A police helicopter has resumed its search after spending the night looking for the woman in heavy rain and winds. A police helicopter and a search and rescue team spent Friday night and much of Saturday looking for her.
She was wearing a mini-skirt, fishnet tights and a hooded top. Her mother called police to say she made her way home on Friday night.
A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "She was inappropriately dressed for the appalling weather and the longer she is gone the more our concern grows."
Possible argument
Ch Insp Mark Allsop, who is leading the investigation said: "We know that the area is frequented by courting couples and we are concerned that a couple may have been up there and had an argument, which may have caused this young woman to wander away.
"If this is the case we need them to get in touch with police as soon as possible to let us know they are OK.
"We are using all available resources to find her, but as yet we have had no further sightings.
"I would appeal to the girl, if she has managed to get herself home or to a place of safety please contact police, you are not in trouble."
The police helicopter resumed its search from the air on Saturday as officers on the ground were joined by the Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team.
Police were also making inquiries at hospitals, hostels and taxi firms in the area.
The alarm was raised at about 2120 BST on Friday after a member of the public spotted the woman on the moors. She was alone and there was no car nearby.
She was last seen on the ridge above Cragg Vale heading towards the Stoodley Pike Monument.
Police urged anyone with any information about the woman to contact them.
