A nine-year-old girl has been killed in a car crash in Angus.

Jessica Lindsay was declared dead at the scene of the two-vehicle accident, near Montrose.

She was with her mother and baby sister in a Citroen Xsara Picasso which collided with another car on the A937 Hillside to Marykirk road at 0630 GMT.

Jessica's 27-year-old mother, who was driving the car, and her 18-month-old sister, were taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee and later released.

The baby was treated for an arm injury.

A man in his 50s who was at the wheel of the other car, a Renault Scenic, was treated for minor injuries at Montrose Infirmary and discharged.

Jessica, who lived at Provost Mitchell Road, Montrose, was a pupil at Laurencekirk Primary School, in Aberdeenshire.

Emergency services said they quickly attended the scene of the crash near Craigo but could not save her.

Accident investigators have examined the crash scene and Tayside Police appealed to anyone who saw the collision to contact them.
