A 22-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of a man in an incident on the M74 in South Lanarkshire last month.

Mark Fleeman, 32, died and his passenger Lee Allsup, 17, was seriously injured when their white transit van crashed near Larkhall on 4 June.

Police had said they wanted to trace another dark-coloured van seen in the area at the time.

The arrested man is expected to appear in court on Friday.

Police said he also faced charges in connection with the alleged attempted murder of Mr Allsup.

'Much-loved'

Mr Fleeman and his passenger were both from Uttoxeter in Staffordshire.

Their van was discovered on the northbound carriageway of the M74 between junctions 7 and 6 (Larkhall and Hamilton) by a member of the public.

Mr Fleeman died at the scene. Mr Allsup was taken to Wishaw General hospital where he was treated for serious injuries.

A week after the incident, detectives questioned motorists at Hamilton and Abington service stations and handed out leaflets appealing for information.

Father-of-two Mr Fleeman, who also had four step-children and five step-grandchildren, was driving to work when the incident happened.

His wife, Sandra, said he was a much loved "character" with a keen sense of humour.
