Armed man barricaded in city flat Man detained following flat seige

An armed siege is under way after a man barricaded himself in a flat in central Edinburgh. Armed police have been deployed in central Edinburgh, after a man believed to be armed with a sword had barricaded himself in a flat.
Lothian and Borders Police are trying to negotiate with the man who is believed to be armed with a sword in Roxburgh Street. Officers trying to negotiate with the man entered the building in Roxburgh Street and a man was detained.
He is thought to be alone after barricading himself in the flat. An armed response unit was called earlier after a woman from the flat was seen outside, in a distressed state.
Armed police and dog handlers are at the scene and some roads are closed off in the surrounding area. Police began the operation at about 1020 BST. Neighbours were advised to leave their homes and keep clear of the immediate area, and some roads were sealed off.
Police from an armed support unit entered the flat at about 1250 BST. Police said the operation began at about 1020 BST.
A woman from the flat, who is the mother of a young child, was seen earlier in the street in a distressed state. Neighbours in the housing association flats, just off the Pleasance, were advised to leave their homes and stay away from the immediate area.
