Search for swimmer missing at sea

Police have been searching for a swimmer who has gone missing off the coast at Whitley Bay on Tyneside.

The coastguard was called out at about 1600 BST when it was reported two swimmers had got into difficulties.

One of the swimmers was found but the other remained unaccounted for and the coastguard called off the rescue effort shortly before 1900 BST.

Police divers were preparing to search the coastline on Saturday evening. No details of the swimmer were released.
