Boy dies after slurry pit rescue

A boy has died after being discovered in a slurry pit at a farm.

Emergency crews found the child, who police said was believed to be aged about seven or eight, near Broseley, Shropshire, on Friday.

Paramedics helped the boy and he was flown by helicopter to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford but died shortly after he arrived.

West Mercia Police said it was conducting an inquiry with the Health and Safety Executive.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said it was called at about 1320 BST and crews found a boy being given resuscitation by a member of the public.

A spokeswoman added: "Crews immediately commenced advanced life support on the boy and he was flown to Princess Royal Hospital.

"Ambulance crews continued emergency medical attempts en route to hospital.

"Medics were on standby at Princess Royal Hospital awaiting the arrival of the boy who was in a critical condition.

"Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the family, ambulance crews and hospital medics nothing could be done to save the boy."
