US goods orders suffer sharp fall

US orders for long-lasting manufactured goods fell in June by the largest amount in five months, amid continued worries for car and plane makers.

Durable goods orders fell 2.5%, the Commerce Department said, much larger than the 0.6% slip economists expected.

The recession hitting demand for air travel saw commercial aircraft orders down 38.5%. Orders for motor vehicles and parts fell by 1%.

The US economy is in its longest recession since World War II.

Once the volatile transportation sector was not included, orders for durable goods were up by 1.1% in June.
