Inquiries are under way into how a 35-year-old man was knocked down by a taxi and killed in Aberdeen city centre late on Friday night.

David Henderson, from the city, was struck by the white Fiat Scudo just before midnight, on Union Street.

Mr Henderson was taken to Aberdeen Royal infirmary where he later died.

Grampian Police said the area, near Union Row, would have been busy and urged members of the public and taxi drivers to come forward.

The taxi, which was being driven by a 40-year-old man, was heading east along Union Street when the collision happened at about 2355 BST.

The road was closed for several hours for investigators to examine the scene and further inquiries are ongoing.

Insp Ewan Innes said: "A young man has tragically lost his life and my sympathies go out to his family.

"I am aware that the area was busy at the time of the collision and a number of persons would have assisted at the scene and may have witnessed the collision.

"I appeal to anyone with information to make themselves known in order that we can speak to them."
