NI man scoops £4.5m lottery win Identity of Lotto winner revealed
(about 16 hours later)
A man from County Londonderry has become Northern Ireland's latest lottery millionaire. A man from County Londonderry will become Northern Ireland's latest lottery millionaire when he collects a cheque for £4.5m later.
The man, who is yet to be named, matched six numbers in Saturday's Lotto jackpot winning £4.5m. Seamus Duffy was the only winner of Saturday's Lotto jackpot. His parents, who live in Greysteel, say he is "over the moon".
He will become Northern Ireland's third lottery millionaire. "I don't think it'll change our life a big lot - probably his but not mine," said Mr Duffy's mother Matty.
Former east Belfast bus driver Peter Lavery won more than £10m in 1996, while north Belfast grandmother Iris Jeffrey won £20m in August 2004. "But it's certainly nice to know he's got it."
The winning ticket was purchased in a Spar shop in Garvagh and its owner said the shop is no stranger to lottery wins.
"We've had a win in the last few weeks with a £5,000 scratch card," said the shop owner.
"In one of our other stores we've had a £70,000 scratch card winner."
'Hardworking'
Greystell florist Anne McKeever is a neighbour of the Duffy family and said Seamus was a "lovely fellow".
"It has just lifted the spirits of everyone in the community. Everyone is delighted," she said.
"Delighted that such a young fellow has won it, because he's hardworking, the family is all hardworking. Everybody is saying 'Isn't is great to hear good news'."
Northern Ireland has had its fair share of big lottery wins.
In 2004 Belfast woman Iris Jeffrey became the UK's biggest single lottery winner when she matched all six number to take home £20.1m.
Former east Belfast bus driver Peter Lavery won more than £10m in 1996.
Two Derry men have also picked winning numbers. Ryan Magee won £6.4m in the Euromillions in 2008, while in 2001 Peter Matchett took home £11.7m in the lottery.
Limavady van driver Stephen Boyd won £1.5m in 2002, and Tracey Mackin from Glengormley was only 16-years-old when she won just over £1m in January 1998.
