BBC sports editor Mihir Bose has resigned from the corporation for personal reasons.

Bose, 62, took up the post in January 2007 and has contributed to news bulletins and the Inside Sport show.

He had been at the Daily Telegraph for more than 10 years and the Sunday Times for 20 years before that, as well as broadcasting on television and radio.

Bose, who was born in India before moving to the UK to go to university, has also written a number of books.

Newspaper columns

A BBC spokeswoman confirmed: "He has resigned for personal reasons."

Bose started his career at London radio station LBC.

He edited the Inside Track sports column in the Sunday Times and launched the Inside Sports column in the Daily Telegraph.

His books have included A History Of Indian Cricket, and Sporting Colours which looked at sport and apartheid.
