A unique tribute has been made to the memory of footballing legend Sir Bobby Robson, in the shape of a special ale.

Bedlington-based Northumberland Brewery has created "Wor Bobby", which is being distributed to pubs and clubs all over the north-east of England.

The brewery, which makes about 40 different beers, is also donating 1p from every sale to Sir Bobby's Newcastle-based cancer foundation.

County Durham-born Sir Bobby died on 31 July after a long battle with cancer.

The beer sold out quickly after going on sale on Monday. A second batch is now being produced.

Brewery founder Dave Roberts said: "Following the sad news of the death of Sir Bobby Robson, we decided to brew a special ale in his honour and to toast his extraordinary life and personality.

"Both on and off the field he has been an inspiration.

"Even after retiring from football management and battling with his own cancer he still helped other people with the formation of his charity, the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

"Wor Bobby only went on sale on Monday but already the first brew has sold out as pubs across the region join in to toast the life of this extraordinary son of the North."

Thousands of tributes have been left at St James' Park

Over the weekend, fans at matches paid tribute to the former England, Ipswich and Newcastle manager.

They include a shrine at Newcastle's St James' Park, which Sir Bobby's family visited on Sunday.

A page on the Just Giving website has been flooded with donations.

The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation was set up in March 2008 to raise money to fund clinical trials of new drugs and treatments to beat cancer.

Books of condolence have also been opened at customer service centres around Newcastle and at the Town Hall in Durham.

Sir Bobby was England manager from 1982 to 1990, when he led the team to the World Cup semi-finals.

During a lengthy career in club management either side of time as England boss he had spells at Fulham, Ipswich, PSV Eindhoven, Sporting Lisbon, Porto, Barcelona and Newcastle.
