A man found dead in Edinburgh city centre has been named by police.

Mark Hunter, 27, of Moir Terrace, Musselburgh, was discovered on Tuesday morning outside a basement flat in the city's North Castle Street.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place to determine how he died. Lothian and Borders Police said they are treating his death as unexplained.

The force are now trying to piece together Mr Hunter's last movements and are urging witnesses to come forward.

Investigating officers cordoned off part of Castle Street following the discovery of Mr Hunter's body.

The man leading the investigation, Det Insp George Thomson, said: "We are still awaiting a post mortem that will hopefully shed some light on this tragic incident.

"In the meantime we are appealing to anyone who was in or around the city centre on Monday night or early on Tuesday morning and may have seen Mr Hunter to contact police immediately.

"Similarly, anyone with information that can assist with our investigation is also asked to come forward."
