The sentencing of US singer Chris Brown on an assault charge has been delayed until 27 August.

A judge in Los Angeles, California, said officials in Virginia had yet to respond whether Brown could serve community labour in that state.

A plea deal calls for Brown to serve five years of probation and six months of community labour.

In June, the 20-year-old R&B star pleaded guilty to beating his former girlfriend Rihanna in February.

The assault took place in Los Angeles, before the Grammy awards.

In a video apology later posted on his website, Brown said his conduct was "inexcusable". He also said that he had repeatedly apologised to Rihanna.
