The alarm was raised by one of the group, which included two children, at about 1400 BST, said Forth Coastguard. The group, which included two children, found themselves waist-high deep in water as they attempted to cross the tidal causeway back to the mainland.

A Forth Coastguard spokesman said the group had "a lucky escape".
"A group of children and adults were stranded on the causeway - they were waist high in water," he said.
"The four kayakers were instrumental in the rescue. They might not have been so lucky without their support."
Cramond Island, which lies to the north-west of Edinburgh, is normally accessed by a causeway which becomes covered in several feet of seawater at high tide.
